Clem stared at the water. As she watched, a shadow grew beneath the surface. A fin broke the eerie calm of the waves, and Clem held back a grin, and looked away quickly, pretending she hadn’t noticed.
When the shadow reached below her dangling feet, the orca raised her head, splashing the water high enough to soak the bottoms of her cargo pants.
Clem couldn’t hold back a laugh then - she hadn’t gotten any better at sneaking. “Hello, Shel.”
Hello. You did not see, yes?
Clem heard her voice not as a voice. More of a…a feeling. Like the sound of the waves on the surf or the wind through the trees. A song. It rumbled beneath her feet and into her mind.
